UVC LED Technology for Disinfection of Water in Ukraine

During the current war in Ukraine, a crisis situation has developed in supplying civilians with clean water. Due to destroyed infrastructure and lack of electricity, the only source of water for Ukrainian people turned out to be lakes, rivers, or old wells, etc. People have had to consume water that is not clean and may contain dangerous pathogenic organisms. In this situation, a simple solution for water disinfection is applying germicidal ultraviolet light (UVC) that is generated by light emitting diodes (LEDs). It is well documented that UVC light at 250 – 275 nm is effective against water-borne pathogenic organisms. Innovative UVC LEDs systems for water disinfection are compact and can be easily installed in water dispensing chains as a plug-and-play water treatment system for most point-of-use applications. They are commercially available from a number of US companies that can supply them to Ukraine. UVC LED reactors can be used to save lives by ensuring access to disinfected water using UVC.  The first ten systems were shipped to Ukraine in November, 2023 by Crystal IS, USA. The tests are planned to evaluate microbiological efficacy of UVC LEDs at 265 nm against local water microflora from various locations and sources and to validate compliance with Ukrainian regulation. A team of local volunteers, international scientists, and engineers have joined forces for this project. The preliminary estimate of the need in UVC LEDs water system is between 300 to 500 systems. This presentation will discuss features of UVC LEDs technology that can be extremely beneficial in crisis situation like wars or natural disasters and provide people with ready-to-use technological solution. Also, the test results of validation different commercial UVC LEDs water systems will be presented and lessons learned from this experience will be shared.  Speaker: Tatiana Koutchma, PhD
