Are You Sustainable Enough Evaluating Priorities and Balancing Tradeoffs as Pressure Mounts

Food companies face unprecedented pressure to navigate increasing public expectations for a sustainable food supply. While sustainability was originally synonymous with being “green,” today, consumers, investors and other important stakeholders view sustainability in a whole new way, incorporating interconnected sets of issues including health and wellness, animal welfare, treatment of workers, food waste, packaging, impact on local and indigenous communities, and a range of additional issues that impact people, animals and the planet. Food companies often are forced to make decisions regarding a single ingredient, process or practice – like non-GMO, pesticide-free or grass-fed, for example – without understanding the interconnected attributes and cascading impact on the entire supply chain. As more interest groups harness this evolving definition of sustainability to promote specific agendas, how do food brands balance outside demands with their commitments to improve the sustainability of the entire system? The stakes to “get it right” are high as one well-meaning decision can have unintended consequences that actually undermine the ultimate goal. In this presentation, Charlie Arnot, CEO of The Center for Food Integrity, details proven strategies to evaluate the growing list of sustainability priorities, determine the impact of company choices and communicate those choices in a way that earns trust. With this information companies can make better informed decisions that are aligned with their values, the values of their stakeholders, and their business objectives.  Speaker: Charlie Arnot
