The World of Reuse and Refill Models

Though it is the most sustainable method for packaging and would lead to a large reduction in plastic waste, the reuse and refill model has been extremely difficult to execute. Multiple players across the supply chain, from manufacturers to retailers, have expressed interest in this type of solution. Even though the reuse and refill model is prioritized and called “crucial” to eliminating plastic waste in the Ellen Macarthur Foundation hierarchy, many companies have shied away due to a risk of residual contamination and the increase in the number of partners needed to enable a supply chain. However, new legislation across the US and Europe is encouraging refill and reuse. New, targeted work to mature these technologies has opened the door to opportunities for reuse and refill that were previously unreachable, and industry experts indicate that the reuse and refill space is starting to gain momentum. Join us as we explore a reduction in plastic waste created by an increase in reuse and refill packaging. Speaker: Jamie Pero Parker, PhD
