Turning Food Science into Food Security in the Developing World

What problem are you addressing? Global food and nutrition insecurity has increased in the past several years and hits the developing world especially hard. Food science and technology offers effective solutions, yet it is not widely recognized in the aid community. What are the most important points the viewers should know? Food Science for Relief and Development (FSRD) is an emerging discipline that seeks to fill this gap by creating awareness of the contributions of food science and supporting application in developing-nation contexts. FSRD has much to offer in terms of practical solutions to reduce food loss and waste, improve food quality, ensure food safety, increase shelf life, enhance nutrition status, and broaden consumer acceptance. What is the broader impact of this information? FSRD seeks to complement and support agricultural and nutrition aid programs to build and strengthen small processors and facilitate the achievement of safe, healthy, nourishing food for all.
